State aid maps, 1920-1974.

The Dept. of Public Works and its successor from 1992, the Massachusetts Highway Department, have been responsible for development and maintenance of all state highways and bridges in the Commonwealth. Additionally, pursuant to MGLA c 90, s 34, they have directed the use of the state Highway Fund to assist counties and municipalities in construction and maintenance of county and town roads. State aid maps were annotated by the department's chief engineer to record such projects.
